So I've been inundating myself with exposure to comic strips as of late. Remember I told you that I was working on "Out of the Mouth of Babes"? It's the next project in the chute and I am therefore reviewing Peanuts and The Boondocks and introducing myself to A turma da Mônica and Armandinho. I will say that Calvin & Hobbes, Mafalda, Macanudo and Yo, Matías have come across my desk(top) as well, but one thing you learn in academia is that it is absolutely, unerringly and inarguably necessary, for your sanity and everyone else's, to NARROW YOUR SCOPE! Meaning, you have to admit only viable paths, patterns and projects into your research. Thusly, I have limited my project to the four strips highlighted above, despite the fact that others, like Quadrinhos Ácidos, really impress me. And then it struck me that my life is funny enough to create my own comic strip. I have the fodder (material); I just don't have the drawing skill. Please take a moment and review the image above and to the left. I opened the Paint program on my PC and started to make an attempt. The green you see is a blanket. The brown was to be an afro. And the speech bubble is, well, a speech bubble. It was in a moment like this that the phrase "leaves much to be desired" must have been born. As a largely visual medium, a comic strip can't exist without images. So, I have a couple of options: (1) Learn to draw. (2) Or not. I don't have a problem with making an attempt, with the assumption that my instructor assumes I know nothing. But between art class, Portuguese class and all my other budding interests, when am I supposed to complete my degree? Let's file this under #goodproblems.
